Drawing from little bits of history she was able to come across about her grandmother who was also a seamstress like Esther, the main character. Esther is a young woman who makes a living by sewing intimate apparel for many of the wealthier women of New York city, She spends much of her time alone, unless she is with client, When she gets a letter from a young Panama digger, she finds herself longing for a love and intimacy that is not so easily attainable. As their relationship continues, she begins dreaming of sewing a trousseau that she may also wear one day.
