This year, UC Santa Cruz’s Theater Arts Program of the Department of Performance, Play & Design and the Cultural Arts and Diversity Resource Center presents Clyde’s, written by two-time Pulitzer prize winner Lynn Nottage. This production will be directed by Theater Arts Teaching Professor Donald Williams.
Nominated for the 2022 Tony Award for Best Play, Clyde’s is a sharp comedy that touches on issues of racial tension and incarceration. Clyde’s follows a cast of formerly incarcerated individuals at a truck stop sandwich shop as they each attempt to rebuild their lives. While their tough as nails boss attempts to thwart their dreams, each staff member is encouraged by their pursuit of creating the perfect sandwich. With profound compassion and lyricism, Clyde’s brings an urgent conversation powerfully to the fore. Nottage pens a deeply moving story of people rising above their past mistakes and reconnecting with the world. In an interview with the New York Times, Nottage remarked, “Clyde’s is a play about people trapped in a liminal space. It is also about community, healing, creativity, mindfulness and forgiveness.” |
